I got to school yesterday and decided I was starving so I went down to the student lounge to get a snack and, surprise! I forgot my wallet! Well, I started counting the rogue change that had been scattered around inside my purse and began to make little piles of pennies and dimes. Students passing by saw this and a few donated to my cause. I'm glad they know what it's like to be hungry, I mean, we're all "starving" artists, there, right? After about five minutes or so I had amassed a small cache of almost five dollars, but I had to be in class, so my stomach would have to wait. At break, two classmates and I wandered over to the 7-11 for burritos and I was happy.
In Color Fundamentals class, I read about "synesthesia" which is when you hear color or can taste color for example. If you've ever experimented with LSD, you probably know what I'm talking about. I have not. Some people, however are naturally born this way and it seems like a really cool way to experience the world. I found out I was not born this way: I tested myself from the example in our textbook. An artist named David Hockney listened to an opera, L'Enfant et les Sortileges , and created this painting:
Ravel's Garden in Night Glow
I listened to the opera and didn't get anything - at all. I basically sat there wondering what the hell was happening and then got bored with that and started thinking about a sandwich.
So, I guess I'm going to have to rely on my eyes and logic to create rather than trying to hear or taste colors since I'm not interested in doing the drugs.

Wow!At first I thought you were going to say that it was YOUR painting, and I was excited by the playful, childlike exuberance of it, except that the bat people in the forest sort of bothered me. But it IS October, with Halloween everywhere, right?
No, this is interesting. Did the opera seem playful and childlike and exuberant? I'm not a musical person, myself. I don't "get" operas and musicals. But I do like listening to classical music at times.
We had to do a painting, in one of my art classes, where each person picks a song and paints it as he listens to it (at home). Then we had to play the music for the class as we explained our painting. Mine was a triptych, in watercolor. Everyone (including Prof.) was expecting me to pick some obscure but classic rock-n-roll. I think I may have shocked them with my choice: Ravel's "Bolero." I'll have to try to find it and take pictures of it and post to my blog so you can see.
Oh, BTW, I gave up on looking for the balloon. I feel like I should rent a big dumpster and fill that sucker with everything in 3 rooms of this 5- room/1bath humble abode. We've lived here 24 years and I swear, I don't know how it all got so deep. LOL!
I like that you're interacting with your classmates. You seem to be soaking up the college/artschool experience with gusto! I did too! One young female student helped me so much, I gave her a graduation present on our last day of class together. I gave her a box of watercolor pencils and a pretty sketchbook to go with it. I wonder what ever happened to the "kids" I went to school with....back in 2004-2006. I hope they found a career they love! And you too!
thanks CC, I don't "get" operas either and I don't know if I would have been able to do your assignment either. I may be able to learn synesthesia, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea.
